Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse was his birth name. Henri was born on the 31 December, 1869.

His Nationality: French.

Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, Nord, France, and the oldest son of a prosperous merchant. He grew up in Bohain-en-Vermandois, Picardie, France. He went to Paris in 1887 to study law, working as a court administrator in after gaining his qualification. In 1889 he first started to paint, after his mother brought him art supplies while he was recovering from appendicitis. He discovered "a kind of paradise"as he later described it, and when he decided to become an artist, it deeply disappointed his father. Initially he painted still-lifes and landscapes. Chardin was one of Matisse's most admired painters. As an art student he made copies of four of Chardin paintings in the Louvre. In 1897 Matisse traveled to an island off the coast of Brittany to visit the Australian painter John Peter Russel. Russell introduced Matisse to one of his friends, Van Gogh who was still unknown at that time. The style of Matisse changed completely, and he would later say "Russell was my teacher, and Russell explained color theory to me”. Matisse exhibited five paintings in 1896 and two were purchased by the government of France. With the model Caroline Joblau, he had a daughter, Marguerite, born in 1894. He got married to Amélie Noellie Parayre in 1898 raised Marguerite together and had two sons. Marguerite and Amélie often served as models for his paintings. He was married to his wife for 41 years but sadly they separated in 1939. In 1941, he underwent surgery in which a colostomy was performed. After the surgery, he started using a wheelchair, and before he died he was cared for by a Russian woman called Lydia Delektorskaya, who one of his models. At the age of 84, in 1954, he Matisse died from a heart attack. He was buried in the cemetery of the Monastère Notre Dame de Cimiez, near Nice.
